SKIM AND SCAN (THEORY)
We skimming when we want to read something quickly to get a general idea. You are Skimming if you:
- Read the table of contents
- Read headings and subheadings
- Read the opening and closing sentences of paragraphs
- Look at any ilustrations or graphic features
When Scanning you want to read something quickly to find a specific idea, word (keyword) or information. You are scanning if you:
- Look for key words related to your topic
- Look for bold print and italics
- Look for words in larger front sizes
You can use the skim technique if you are previewing a book, if you are reading a book before buying it and if you are looking through a newspaper or magazine.
You can use the scanning techniques if you want to answer an especific question, or if you are trying to find a number or looking in a dictionary
