SKIM AND SCAN (THEORY)


Skim and scan are a couple of so many reading techniques, but with so much differents between each other. 

We skimming when we want to read something quickly to get a general idea. You are Skimming if you: 

  • Read the table of contents
  • Read headings and subheadings
  • Read the opening and closing sentences of paragraphs 
  • Look at any ilustrations or graphic features 


When Scanning you want to read something quickly to find a specific idea, word (keyword) or information. You are scanning if you:

  •  Look for key words related to your topic 
  • Look for bold print and italics 
  • Look for words in larger front sizes


You can use the skim technique if you are previewing a book, if you are reading a book before buying it and if you are looking through a newspaper or magazine. 

You can use the scanning techniques if you want to answer an especific question, or if you are trying to find a number or looking in a dictionary
